The Harmony Centre
The Harmony Center is an ASD vocational centre located on Vancouver Island in Campbell River, B.C. While working towards giving the Northern parts of the island a more accessible help centre the incorporation of the Enso circle and its concept of inclusivity is at the core of what the centre stands.
The Harmony Center's logo is the Enso circle which in Buddhism stands for togetherness; a core belief incorporated into the concept, layout and every detail of its design.
Since there is no true cure to ASD the main goal is to give everyone a sade space to improve deficits in communication, interactions and minimize unwanted behaviours. This will be achieved. by integrating design concepts such as acoustics, spatial sequencing, escape spaces, compartmentalization, transition stages, sensory zoning and safety (ASPECTSS). Harmony creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the ASD community to learn and practice new life skills while gaining further independence.
In order to ensure that human healthy is being prioritized, the Harmony Centre will incorporate: acoustics, lighting, spatial configuration and materials. Enclosed rooms will provide insulation to allow for manipulation of sound pressure. Colours affect the human mood and behaviour; the friendliest design choices for those living with ASD are small areas of bright colours contrasted with light earth tones. Spaces will be configured in an orderly and defined way to encourage individuals with ASD to have increased focus. Lastly, it is crucial for furniture to be modular as well as easily sanitized because people with autism tend to feel more comfortable in clean spaces.
Once patients leave Harmony Centre the objective is to have children leave with developed functional skills so that they are ready to be introduced to the real world. By accomodating sensory needs and designing ideal learning environments while also stimulating real world experiences, members are offered the best chances of success.
